Chapter 21
At the knock on the door, I shout to the girls. âAre you guys ready? Blake and Oliver are here!â
âComing!â They yell back. I grab my purse and throw my hair up in a bun before answering the door.
âThe girls are coming now. Weâll have to move their booster seats over to your car.â They brought an SUV today, which has enough space for all of us.
âWe bought some.âOliver states. Iâm a little shocked.
âThat wasnât necessary.â
âWe wanted to. Itâs easier this way.â Blake says.
âWell, alright then.â The girls run past me, tumbling into the guys.
âThis is gonna be the bestest day ever!â Alice shrieks. We head to the SUV and get the girls buckled in. The guys sit in front and I sit in back.
âAlright girls, listen. Supplies first, then we can get clothes and shoes, and then weâll look at other stuff. Okay?â
âOkay. But momma I really wanna get a lunchbox. You know, so I can take lunch to school.â Violet says, very serious.
âOf course, Violet. Weâll look at the lunchboxes and backpacks and all that at the end.â
âWell, I am reinventing myself. So I need to get big girl clothes.â Alice states.
âWhat does that even mean, Alice? Where did you even hear that phrase from?â I ask her with a laugh.
âMom, I am almost seven years old. I canât keep wearing little kid clothes. And I heard it on tv at grandmas.â She huffs.
âAlice, you wear normal clothes. Dresses, shorts, and pants. Itâs the same kind of stuff I wear. What do you mean little kid clothes?â I canât keep a straight face because itâs just too funny.
âYea but all of my stuff is sparkly and pink. Youâre clothes are grown up.â
âWell, thatâs because Iâm a grown up. Donât grow up too quick, Alice, or youâll miss all the fun. But we can look at all the different stuff at the store, okay?â
âOkay.â She concedes. If she doesnât care for pink and sparkles anymore, I wonât force her to wear it.
âWeâre here.â Oliver states. I unbuckle the girls and climb out behind them.
âAlright girls, the rules apply. You know them so I wonât repeat them. But since weâre in a store you must be with me, Blake, or Oliver at all times. No running off.â I tell them. I grab Aliceâs hand with my left and Violetâs with my right. Blake stands on Aliceâs other side and Oliver is on Violetâs.
Once inside the store, Blake grabs a shopping cart and I pull up the school supplies list on my phone. âOkay, letâs get these lists cleared and then we can go get clothes. Might as well look at backpacks and lunchboxes too.â I tell the guys, leading the way to the school supplies.
After a couple hours, with a food break in between, weâre pulling into the parking lot of a clothing store. Itâs specifically for kids, much to Aliceâs displeasure. âIâm sure they will have stuff you like, Alice.â I tell her as we enter the building.
âI want dresses, momma.
